Motorservice’s piston-ring brochure says that boost is up to 90 percent of the compression ring’s total pressure force during the combustion cycle. It acts mainly on the first ring, and to a lesser degree on the second. Those rings sit in grooves at the top of the piston. On the majority of engines the gas seal is two compression rings, with an oil-control ring below them.

On the Department of Energy fuel-economy page, octane is how well a gasoline resists knocking or pinging, the air-fuel mixture detonating before it should. That page says many newer vehicles can move the spark to cut the knock, and that power and fuel economy still fall when the fuel is below the octane the vehicle requires. The myths page comes at premium from the other direction. A vehicle that was not designed for premium, and that does not knock hard on regular, should not be counted on for an economy gain from premium in ordinary driving.

Florida’s insurance page defines the filing, written there as SR22, as a certification of bodily-injury and property-damage liability for reinstatement under the Florida Financial Responsibility Law. The policy is the coverage. The SR-22 is the certificate.

It issues an ownership record for a vehicle a licensed manufacturer did not build complete. The state looks at the finished car, takes receipts for the major parts, and either accepts a number that came with a kit or assigns one. California’s registration page calls that vehicle specially constructed: a homemade or kit vehicle built for private use, not made by a licensed manufacturer, and not eligible for resale. Texas calls the hobbyist’s version an assembled vehicle, and it puts a custom vehicle, a street rod, a replica, and a glider kit under the same name. Florida does not use one name. A car built from a kit, a car built from parts, and a complete replica a manufacturer sold already finished are three procedures.

In the layout TM 9-8000 calls Hotchkiss drive, the spring does the locating as well. The Army manual of 25 October 1985, with Change 1, says the springs are pivoted on brackets at their forward ends and shackled to the frame at the rear, that they resist the torque reaction, the drive thrust, and the alignment of the axle housings, and that the rear spring brackets are where that driving thrust is applied to the frame. A coil spring, in the same chapter, cannot absorb torque in the suspension, so control arms and stabilizers keep the geometry.

Where does the second driveshaft get its torque?

From a transfer case. TM 9-8000, the Army manual of 25 October 1985, puts that case in an off-road driveline so it can divide engine torque between the front and rear driving axles, and so it can set the front propeller shaft off to the side of the engine. Ground clearance and a body that still sits at a usable height are the reasons that manual gives for the offset. In the conventional layout there, the high-range sliding gear is splined to the transmission main shaft, which is the input. The case can then turn a rear output and a front output. The split between the two wheels on one axle is a differential. The transfer is the split between the axles.
